In 2008 our church began helping with a neighborhood garden in a poor community south of downtown at Gilbert and Waco. Our goals were to grow and give away vegetables, to provide a place to bring Salvation Army youth and build relationships with them outside their center, and to open ourselves to God’s healing work in this struggling neighborhood. Again this year we are working in the garden, and are better organized and more committed to these goals and to including the neighbors in the process. As we began working at the garden, we met Ashley and BJ B. They live in a Christian community near the garden which is committed to reaching out to the neighborhood with the healing love of Jesus. Ashley and BJ have since helped out with Legacy Camps, and the other couple, Matt and Catherine J., will be two of our lead gardeners. It is an encouragement to see how God has gone before us and was already at work in the neighborhood before we ever got there. And our presence in the neighborhood is an encouragement to these four living there as we join them in reaching this neighborhood for Christ.
