Legacy Camp at Church of the Savior General Information for Interns 875 Spaulding, Wichita, Kansas, 67203, 316-263-2391 June 22-26, 2009
Student interns will bring their own unique gifts to further God’s work in this week-long day camp for at-risk youth. The camp features quality classes in music performance, art, dance, and drama, as well as worship, Bible study, small group interaction, and journal writing. The campers range in age from 12 to 18; about 75% have been adjudicated and live in a level five and six group detention facility designed to reintegrate them into society. We believe that God has given the arts for healing and that by offering the opportunity to learn and create, we can have a positive impact on broken lives.
Goals: The goals of the camp are:
to offer the real hope of God’s love and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ to hurting kids
to provide opportunity for each camper to discover new areas of creativity and positive tools for self-expression
to cultivate a sense of belonging, fellowship and support among camp participants
to work together as the body of Christ, allowing God access to all that we are and all that we have for His purposes at Legacy Camp
This is the sixth year Church of the Savior has hosted Legacy Camp, working in partnership with Legacy Ministry, to provide resources to vulnerable youth. Legacy Ministry leads art and music camps around the country, bringing teachers, supplies, and expertise to hurting kids. We believe that as Jesus Christ laid down his life in service to humanity, we, His followers are called to do the same. The people of Church of the Savior support this ministry with prayer, and enormous investments of time, energy, money, and other resources, yet it is the Holy Spirit who causes it to bear fruit.
Activities: During the Camp, student interns work with teachers in the 20-21 art and music classes taught each day. Some of the classes offered last year were drama, guitar, drawing, gospel choir, percussion, swing dance, painting, stomp, music and video filming and production, baking, flying things, photography, wearable art, set design, gardening, scrapbooking, grab bag, basket making, jewelry, and poetry. Expertise in the subject matter is not a prerequisite. Much more important is an intern’s willingness to engage with the youth. Interns will also help with planning, with leading small groups, with the worship, and with setup and physical arrangements. We encourage interns to be part of God’s work and bring whatever gifts they have to the process.
